Factory Orders Rebound
Following six straight monthly declines, factory orders jumped 1.8% in February, the Commerce Department reported, offering hope that the economic slide is moderating. The increase in orders was helped by a 3.5% gain in demand for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years. Orders for non-durable goods, such food and paper, increased 0.3% in February. Orders for machinery jumped 12.7%. Orders for non-defense capital goods, excluding aircraft, seen as an indicator of business investment plans, fell 1.4% in February. Orders for transportation goods grew 2.7%, including a 1.1% gain in demand for motor vehicles and parts.
